Italy entered the quarter-final clash as the heavy tournament favorites after compiling a flawless record of six wins from six matches while losing just a single set in the earlier rounds. The squad arrived at the tournament holding the titles of world champions from last year, Olympic gold medalists from the Paris 2024 Games, and three-time Nations League winners.
The European Volleyball Championship, organized biennially by the European Volleyball Confederation, features the top national teams across the continent competing for continental honours. Italy's roster features several of international volleyball's prominent figures, including opposite hitter Paola Egonu and outside hitter Myriam Sylla.
Sweden reached the quarter-finals after finishing third in Group D during the group stage and securing a straightforward 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the round of 16. Few observers expected Sweden to threaten Italy, particularly after the group stage meeting between the two teams where Italy won convincingly following a tight second set.
The Swedish national team has made significant progress under the leadership of Italian head coach Lorenzo Micelli, relying heavily on the offensive firepower of star opposite hitter Isabelle Haak.
Sensational Opening Set
The opening set initially followed expected lines as the world champions established a four-point advantage early on before extending their lead to 11-6 after a few minutes. However, a sudden breakdown in Italy's play combined with disciplined execution from Sweden flipped the momentum, allowing the Scandinavians to surge ahead to an 18-16 lead.
Although Italy managed to equalize the score, Micelli's team controlled the closing exchanges to claim a sensational 25-21 set win.
Sweden Misses Opportunity in Second Set
Sweden maintained their form following the short interval, taking the first three rallies of the second set. Italy responded in waves, claiming five of the next six points, but continued to struggle with inconsistency.
Isabelle Haak proved central to Sweden's attack, accumulating 20 points by the conclusion of the second set. Haak's high-volume scoring has been a hallmark of Sweden's campaign, highlighted by her 52-point performance in an earlier victory over Croatia.
Sweden built a 23-21 lead late in the set and stood two points away from taking a two-set advantage over the tournament favorites. However, the Swedish side failed to earn a set point as a lack of composure in the final moments allowed Italy to stage a late rally and claim the set 26-24.
Italy Regains Control in Third Set
Securing the second set proved to be the turning point Italy required. The world champions started the third set strongly, establishing early leads of 7-2 and 10-4.
Sweden fought back once again, executing a block on Italy's top scorer Paola Egonu to narrow the deficit to 14-11 before tying the set at 21-21. Nevertheless, Italy performed more effectively in the closing points to secure the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 overall lead.
Fourth Set Decider
Italy maintained control from the start of the fourth set as their offensive choices expanded to include middle attacks. In contrast, Sweden became predictable by relying continuously on Haak while other attacking options proved ineffective.
Italy seemed poised for a comfortable win when leading 18-13, but Haak elevated her play to propel Sweden into a 22-20 lead late in the set.
From 20-22 down, Italy responded decisively. The world champions blocked Haak to regain the lead, earned two match points through a successful attack by Egonu, and closed out the match 25-23 with a left-wing attack from Myriam Sylla.
Potential Semi-Final Against Poland
Italy's quarter-final victory advances them into the semi-finals, where they will face Poland if the Polish team defeats the Netherlands in their quarter-final fixture. The quarter-final match between Poland and the Netherlands is scheduled for Thursday, September 3 at 15:00.
Poland's national team, known as the White and Reds, is seeking to end a 17-year wait to reach the semi-finals of the European Championship.
