Minnesota Vikings defender Jamal Adams was carted off the field with a right knee injury during his debut against the New York Giants on Saturday. The 30-year-old veteran suffered the injury at MetLife Stadium after playing just 11 defensive snaps in the National Football League preseason opener.
Adams left the game following an apparent non-contact injury with 13 minutes and 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter. His final play came in pass defense on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart's 15-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Fields.
As he tracked wideout Calvin Austin III across the field, Adams suddenly crumbled to the turf. He walked into the sideline medical tent for evaluation before being carted off to the locker room.
Coach reaction and injury severity
Following Minnesota's 13-10 victory over New York, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed the injury concern during his post-game press conference. O'Connell indicated that initial medical evaluations suggested a serious setback.
"Initial exam does not look good," O'Connell said after the Vikings' 13-10 win over New York. "Don't want to confirm anything until we see the imaging on that."
O'Connell had also spoken about Adams before the second half began, expressing deep sympathy for the veteran defender.
"In such a short amount of time, Jamal has done such an unbelievable job coming here," O'Connell said before the second half began. "You feel his passion every single day. Certainly felt it spending a few moments with him before they took him in."
"You're just crushed for him, the role he was kind of paving for himself, and then just having a personality, experience, toughness that he brought in such a short amount of time," O'Connell added. "We're going to miss him."
Contract and position switch
The setback represents a major injury blow for both Adams and the Vikings. Minnesota signed the defensive star to a one-year contract last month on the eve of training camp in July.
Adams had been adapting to a versatile role within Minnesota's defensive system. Although he initially spent the majority of his career as a safety, Adams made the switch to linebacker last season while with the Las Vegas Raiders. Throughout training camp, the Vikings have reportedly been using him at both positions.
Career trajectory and injury history
The game at MetLife Stadium marked a return to familiar territory for Adams. MetLife Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, serves as the home venue for both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Adams spent three seasons playing on the MetLife turf with the Jets, who selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft as a safety.
Since 2020, Adams has moved across the league, featuring for the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and most recently the Las Vegas Raiders. The National Football League regular season demands durability, but the later stages of his career have been marred by repeated health issues.
Despite earning three Pro Bowl selections as one of the top defensive players in the league, injuries have severely limited his playing time in recent years. The veteran defender played nine or fewer games in each of the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons.
Minnesota will await MRI imaging results to determine the full extent of the damage to Adams's right knee and establish a timeline for his recovery.
