Japanese knotweed could spread to new UK gardens this autumn as heavy rain and flooding carry plant fragments downstream, invasive weed specialists have warned.

Met Office rainfall data reveals a stark divide between the UK's wettest and driest regions, placing homeowners in northern areas at the greatest risk of infestation.

South Scotland recorded the highest rainfall in the UK between September and December last year, with 770.9mm falling over the four-month period. North Scotland followed with 679.1mm, while North West England and North Wales received 573.2mm.

Experts warn that if similarly wet conditions return this autumn, flooding, riverbank erosion and powerful water flows could transport invasive plant parts into gardens that have never had them before.

"Following a flood, homeowners may discover unfamiliar, fast-growing plants during the next growing season," warned Jennifer Holmes, an expert from Environment Controls.

Regional rainfall and flood risk divide

Data from the Met Office, the national weather service of the UK, shows that areas at moderate risk include South West England and South Wales with 532.8mm of rainfall, Northern Ireland with 497.9mm, and North East England with 405.0mm.

Regions facing the lowest risk from flood-borne spread include Central England with 312.5mm, South East England with 306.7mm, and East Scotland, which recorded 298.2mm over the same period.

Japanese knotweed spreads when fragments break away from its underground stem system, known as rhizomes. Even a very small viable fragment is capable of producing a new plant.

Himalayan balsam, another invasive species, poses a similar threat as its seeds enter rivers, streams, and drainage channels before being carried to new locations.

"Autumn and winter storms don't just cause water damage," Holmes said. "Flooding, riverbank erosion and high water flows can carry invasive plant seeds and root fragments downstream into places where they were not previously growing."

Property damage and financial costs

Established Japanese knotweed can exploit weaknesses in paving, brickwork, walls, and drainage systems, while complicating property sales and construction projects.

In Swansea, a coastal city in Wales, an infestation of knotweed started to destabilise a 15-foot retaining wall located at the edge of a residential property.

Treatment costs also increase as infestations become established, while landowners face potential civil claims if the plant spreads onto neighbouring property.

Specialists estimate that Japanese knotweed affects one in 20 homes across the UK and can reduce property value by up to 15 per cent. More than 100,000 infestations are recorded nationwide each year.

Environmental factors and advice for homeowners

Experts stress that rainfall alone does not determine infestation risk. Proximity to waterways, nearby or upstream infestations, local flooding, riverbank erosion, and the movement of contaminated soil also play critical roles.

The warning follows reports from climate scientists that El Niño conditions, a warming Pacific climate pattern, have developed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Although El Niño's influence on UK weather is indirect, it increases the likelihood of milder, wetter, and windier conditions during autumn and early winter. Previous warnings from experts note that bouts of warm weather can also cause Japanese knotweed to spread more aggressively.

Homeowners who spot suspicious growth following flooding are advised to photograph it and seek professional identification rather than reaching for garden tools.

"Suspected Japanese knotweed should not be dug up, cut or strimmed because this can distribute viable plant fragments," Holmes said.

How to identify Japanese knotweed

Late August and early September mark the primetime for the invasive plant to flower and for property owners to spot an active infestation.

Key indicators to look out for during summer months include white to cream-coloured flowers that grow 6cm to 15cm long with a feathery look, alongside broad, heart-shaped leaves with a pointed tip that grow alternately along the stem.

Homeowners should also look for hollow, bamboo-like stems that are green, red, or purple, forming dense thickets. Beneath the ground, the plant features huge roots that can stretch 3 metres (10 feet) deep.

Capable of growing up to 10cm (4 inches) per day, and up to eight inches in a single day during peak growth, Japanese knotweed strangles other plants and deprives them of key nutrients and water, killing entire gardens.

Background and history of the species

Known scientifically as Fallopia japonica, Japanese knotweed is native to Japan. Victorians brought the species to Britain as an ornamental garden plant and to line railway tracks to stabilise embankment soil.

The plant has no natural enemies in the UK, whereas in Asia it is controlled by native fungi and insects. In the United States, it is scheduled as an invasive weed in 12 states and can be found in a further 29 states.

Specialists have also raised alarms over other invasive species establishing roots across the UK, including four aggressive weeds highlighted by experts, such as the highly poisonous Devil's Trumpet.
