Jorge Jesus stands by Cristiano Ronaldo row after exit

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus said he would change nothing about his clash with Cristiano Ronaldo following the forward's shock retirement from international football.

The 76-year-old coach insisted that his recent dispute with Ronaldo during the UEFA Nations League was not the trigger for the legendary striker's definitive departure from the national team.

Addressing reporters at a press conference, Jesus addressed the controversy that occurred several weeks ago, maintaining that he had no regrets regarding how the situation with the veteran forward was handled.

Jesus explained that he would change absolutely nothing, stressing that he made his decision as a coach by prioritising the interests of his squad and the Portuguese national side.

The coach added that he was convinced his conduct had not caused the forward to walk away, revealing that he only learned of the retirement yesterday when Ronaldo published a video and an official statement online.

Jesus told the media that he was informed at the exact same moment as the public, dismissing suggestions that their disagreement had forced the five-time Ballon d'Or winner out of international football.

Nations League dispute

The rift between manager and star player had developed during Portugal's recent UEFA Nations League campaign, creating intense speculation surrounding Ronaldo's future with the national team.

The sudden announcement of his international retirement nonetheless generated widespread surprise among football supporters across the world, concluding a career that spanned 23 years.

In an emotional farewell message shared across his social media accounts, the former Real Madrid forward wrote that the day had arrived to return the number 7 shirt of the national team.

Ronaldo explained that he never thought the jersey belonged only to him, but stated that he had felt the privilege and responsibility of wearing it for 23 years.

Historic international record

Known by the nickname El Comandante, Ronaldo established himself as the highest goalscorer in the history of international football, finishing his Portugal career with 146 goals in 234 official matches.

Ronaldo is also recognized as the all-time top scorer in football history, having broken scoring records at both domestic and international level across more than two decades in senior professional football.

His presence fundamentally transformed Portuguese football, lifting a nation that previously had no major honours and only sparse appearances at World Cup tournaments into a perennial contender on the global stage.

Under his leadership as captain, Portugal captured their first major international trophy by defeating hosts France at Euro 2016, before going on to claim UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Managerial career and background

Jesus, who has built a distinguished managerial career over four decades with prominent spells at Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting CP as well as Brazilian side Flamengo, maintained a firm stance when questioned about the management of the dressing room.

The veteran manager reiterated that a coach must always place collective team harmony and sporting objectives above individual personalities, regardless of the stature of the player involved.

The UEFA Nations League, launched by European football's governing body to replace friendly matches with competitive fixtures, had provided the backdrop to the disagreement between the two men during the group stages.

Portugal football future

With Ronaldo's departure now finalised, the Portuguese national team faces the challenge of navigating upcoming international fixtures without their longtime talisman and record appearance holder.

Jesus and his coaching staff must now prepare the national squad for the remainder of their competitive calendar, turning the page on the most decorated chapter in Portuguese football history.
