Spanish entrepreneurs José and Patri, creators of the channel Aventuras Jose y Patri, have permanently moved into a motorhome to stop paying rent. The couple made the decision following an intense three-month trip through the Swiss and Italian Alps, choosing vehicle ownership over traditional renting at a time when housing prices are soaring.
The economic motivation was a central pillar of their major life change. José and Patri explained that paying off a motorhome builds long-term equity, whereas monthly rent payments never return. They noted that unlike rental costs, the vehicle is an asset they will care for so they can recover their investment when they sell it in the future.
The motorhome now serves as their primary residence, personal transport, and mobile office. By viewing housing expenses as a long-term financial commitment in a mobile asset, the couple transformed monthly housing costs into equity.
Transition from van conversion to motorhome
Although the couple had considered changing their living situation for some time, cold weather in the high mountains accelerated their plans. During their last summer trip, temperatures dropped near zero degrees Celsius, and a lack of proper heating forced them to reevaluate their immediate needs.
José and Patri confessed that they would not have returned from their journey so quickly had it not been for the freezing temperatures. They originally planned to buy a larger van and convert it into a camper themselves.
Their plans changed after consulting an industry expert who owned a vehicle dealership. The expert asked why they were waiting when numerous low-profile motorhome models were already available on the market. After analyzing costs and construction timelines, the couple purchased a kilometer-zero motorhome that matched their budget.
Off-grid technology and storage rules
Living and working on the road required higher equipment standards than a standard vacation vehicle, leading José and Patri to prioritize energy self-sufficiency and comfort. Their new home features a reinforced 330-watt electrical installation powered by two solar panels.
The solar setup provides them with electricity to spare while traveling through sunny regions such as Málaga and the rest of Andalusia. The vehicle measures six meters in length and includes a spacious lounge alongside an L-shaped kitchen designed with a powerful corner layout that provides unusual storage capacity for a mobile home.
To maintain vehicle stability while driving, the couple established strict living and safety rules inside the motorhome. They implemented a rule restricting weight on the upper storage shelves to no more than three kilograms.
Operating a fitness business on the road
The transition to motorhome living is not a perpetual vacation for the couple. José and Patri continue to run their main business project, Málaga Entrena, providing personalized fitness training to clients remotely and in person.
Living in a motorhome gives their business a unique competitive advantage. They said the vehicle allows them to travel across Spain and Europe to train directly with their clients while sharing different locations along their journey.
Rather than following a traditional path centered on marriage, a job, and a mortgage, the couple emphasized critical thinking about alternative lifestyles. José encouraged people to pursue lives in which they feel fulfilled rather than following preset societal patterns simply because they are common.
