Karystianou Party Faces Exits as Former General Speaks Out

Retired Brigadier General Athanasios Papanikolaou warned of central control and undisclosed decision makers in Maria Karystianou party Hope for Democracy.

Karystianou Party Faces Exits as Former General Speaks Out

Retired Air Force Brigadier General Athanasios Papanikolaou has accused the political movement led by Maria Karystianou of centralising control, following a wave of resignations from the organization in Greece on August 5, 2026.

Papanikolaou, who withdrew his support from the Hope for Democracy party several months earlier, spoke on SKAI television to address the recent departures of prominent party cadres. He stated that the recent exits of key officials confirmed the warnings he had previously issued about internal management and party structure.

According to Papanikolaou, individuals with political backgrounds in other parties have assumed influential roles within the organization without public transparency. He said no one inside the movement knows who these decision makers are or how internal policies are being determined.

Undisclosed leadership and centralisation

When asked directly whether he had observed centralising tendencies during his time with the movement, Papanikolaou affirmed that he clearly had. He pointed out that figures from past political parties were operating behind the scenes while members remained unaware of who was directing overall strategy.

Papanikolaou explained that he had initially joined the movement solely to assist on defence policy and foreign relations, without any ambition to seek political office or manage organizational affairs. However, he found that key internal figures showed no willingness to discuss national security or formulate a concrete platform.

He noted that Hope for Democracy had still failed to present any clear policy positions or a formal party program to the public. Seeing that the movement could not function effectively under such conditions, he decided to step down early and expressed no regret over his departure.

Prior warnings and wave of resignations

Papanikolaou had previously broken ranks with the party on June 25, 2026, when he publicly criticized the organization. At that time, he highlighted that Hope for Democracy lacked democratic procedures and possessed no defined line on national issues.

His latest comments follow new turmoil within the party ranks on August 4, 2026, when party official Katerina Moutsatsou and two other cadres submitted their formal letters of resignation. The sudden departures sparked wider public debate over the stability of the movement leadership.

Following the resignations, commentator Thanasis Avgerinos publicly mocked Maria Karystianou on August 4, 2026. Avgerinos remarked sarcastically that the underlying plan within the organization had moved beyond taking over leadership to an outright kidnapping of the party.

Background to Hope for Democracy

Hope for Democracy was established in Greece under the leadership of Maria Karystianou, who gained widespread public recognition following her advocacy for victims of the 2023 Tempi train collision. The movement sought to bring civic accountability and political reform into the Greek parliamentary landscape.

Military figures such as Brigadier General Papanikolaou were initially brought into advisory roles to bolster the movement on national defence, Aegean security policy, and military governance. SKAI television, a major broadcast network based in Athens, has extensively covered the ongoing political fallout surrounding the movement.

Lack of official party platform

The absence of an official policy program remains a focal point of criticism from former allies. Papanikolaou reiterated that despite months of internal discussions, the leadership has failed to deliver clear proposals on economic policy, national security, or administrative reform.

As further departures threaten internal cohesion, observers are watching whether Maria Karystianou will address the claims of central control or publish an official platform to stabilize the movement ahead of upcoming political developments.
