French law enforcement authorities have uncovered an organized criminal network operating out of a Paris prison that planned to kidnap Real Madrid football star Kylian Mbappe alongside dozens of wealthy targets across France.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported on Wednesday, September 2, that 18-year-old suspect Clement L. allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping plot and multiple residential break-ins while serving time at the Vilpinte correctional center in Seine-Saint-Denis.
Police discovered the 27-year-old French forward's address on two contraband mobile phones seized from the suspect's prison cell. Investigators found 26 specific target locations logged on the devices, including addresses belonging to prominent singers, footballers, jewelers, a Chinese wholesaler, and a millionaire Turkish meat trader based in Val-d'Oise.
French authorities opened a formal investigation against Clement L. and an alleged accomplice on August 21. Prosecutor statements delivered during a court hearing on Wednesday morning revealed that the teenager was placed in solitary confinement to prevent further criminal coordination, while his co-suspect was released under judicial supervision.
The criminal operations and kidnapping schemes were carried out or planned between April 11 and August 19 across several regions in France, including the affluent Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, Saint-Brice-sous-Forets in Val-d'Oise, and Santenay in Cote-d'Or.
Watchmaker robbery in Neuilly-sur-Seine
The investigation originated from an attempted home invasion on the morning of April 25 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Three individuals posing as delivery workers carrying an empty parcel approached the residence of a Paris watchmaker, but fled after the resident suspected a trap and refused to open the door.
On May 4 at approximately 2:45 p.m., two armed men carrying handguns raided the same watchmaker's commercial store. The perpetrators shoved the business owner, stole 11 luxury timepieces valued at 150,000 euros, and escaped on a motor scooter.
Police apprehended one suspect in nearby Asnieres-sur-Seine half an hour later after his scooter collided with a delivery truck. Detectives from the Paris Anti-Organized Crime Brigade (BRB) subsequently recovered latent fingerprints from the empty box left at the watchmaker's home and traced the gang's getaway car on the Paris ring road, where it was using counterfeit license plates linked to a valid vehicle registration.
The Paris BRB, a specialized branch of the French judicial police, took charge of the probe after linking the physical evidence to two individuals, identifying a teenager and Clement L. At the time of his identification, Clement L. was already held in pre-trial detention for separate offenses involving rape, pimping, and organized gang theft.
Neuilly-sur-Seine, situated directly west of Paris along the Seine river, is recognized as one of France's wealthiest municipalities, frequently targeted by organized burglary networks seeking high-value assets and prominent residents.
Contraband phones and Snapchat commands
Despite his incarceration at the Vilpinte correctional center in Seine-Saint-Denis, Clement L. allegedly directed gang operations from inside his cell using the mobile application Snapchat under the online pseudonym Lester Z. Correctional officers subsequently conducted a search of his cell and confiscated two hidden mobile phones.
A detailed forensic examination of the seized devices revealed a compiled hit list of 26 affluent individuals and business owners. Alongside Kylian Mbappe, the targeted list included several music artists, professional athletes, luxury jewelry merchants, a Chinese wholesale trader, and a Turkish meat wholesaler in Val-d'Oise reported to be a millionaire.
On August 19, law enforcement officers intercepted Clement L. outside a courthouse just as his trial on separate human trafficking charges was postponed and he was temporarily granted release under judicial supervision. Officers immediately re-arrested him alongside the alleged owner of the vehicle used to transport the robbers to Neuilly-sur-Seine.
During the arrests on August 19, police officers seized plastic zip ties and five iPhones from the suspects. Forensic specialists have not yet completed their analysis of the five confiscated iPhones, and both young men were placed into police custody.
Suspect background and court testimony
Clement L., who holds dual French and Swiss nationality, dropped out of school during his first year at a vocational culinary institute. His criminal record includes two prior convictions for drug-related offenses and one conviction for violent robbery, with his father residing in Seine-et-Marne and his mother living in Ireland.
During police questioning, the 18-year-old admitted to involvement in the criminal network but denied being the primary mastermind. He claimed to have acted solely as an intermediary coordinating instructions between an unidentified gang leader and the operational members executing attacks on the ground.
Appearing before the court on Wednesday morning to contest his detention and isolation, Clement L. acknowledged the severity of the allegations against him but appealed to be transferred back to standard custody. He stated that solitary confinement surrounded by dangerous inmates would not aid his rehabilitation, reiterating his childhood ambition to resume his studies and train as a professional chef.
The public prosecutor strongly opposed the appeal, telling the court that the teenager led a chaotic criminal lifestyle and that isolation was the only measure capable of instilling accountability given his involvement in new target plots against a rapper and a famous athlete. The investigating court rejected the suspect's appeal, ordering him to remain in prison cut off from external communication.
