Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has highlighted a new fixed electricity tariff announced by power provider DEH, which sets the rate at 0.115 euros per kilowatt-hour alongside a fixed monthly charge of 3.5 euros.
Writing in a post on social media, Mitsotakis pointed out that the new price structure comes at a time when international energy prices are recording renewed increases across global markets.
He noted that under different conditions, rising international energy costs would automatically translate into higher monthly bills for Greek households. However, he stated that the government has managed to keep energy prices low, emphasizing that this outcome is not accidental.
Financial strength of DEH
Mitsotakis linked the ability to maintain lower consumer tariffs directly to the financial condition of DEH, arguing that a financially strong public enterprise can absorb a portion of rising costs rather than passing them on to retail consumers.
He made specific reference to the state of the utility in 2019, claiming that the company was on the verge of bankruptcy at that time. By contrast, he said that the energy provider today is capable of operating as a shield of protection for Greek families against external economic pressures.
He added that such cost absorption would not be possible without a Public Power Corporation that is financially robust enough to take on part of the expense itself instead of transferring it to the end consumer.
Role of the state energy utility
DEH, officially known as the Public Power Corporation, is the largest electric utility in Greece, responsible for power generation and supply throughout the Mediterranean nation. Fixed energy tariffs provide consumers with a stable rate per kilowatt-hour over a set period, shielding householders from fluctuations in wholesale market prices.
Mitsotakis has served as prime minister of Greece since 2019 as head of the center-right New Democracy party. Concluding his statement on the utility's new rates, the prime minister emphasized that a strong DEH ultimately means something very simple, which is less pressure on household power bills.
