Leg blood vessels: Workouts fail to stop sitting damage

Regular intensive workouts cannot protect blood vessels in the legs from the negative impact of long continuous sitting, researchers have concluded in a new study.

The study, published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, found that even high levels of physical fitness fail to prevent temporary arterial dysfunction caused by remaining seated for two hours without moving.

The investigation tracked 21 healthy young male participants over a period of 12 weeks to examine how physical conditioning interacts with sedentary behavior. Eleven of the participants completed a structured high-intensity interval training program, while the remaining 10 individuals maintained their customary level of daily physical activity.

Researchers evaluated the condition of each participant's blood vessels before and after two hours of uninterrupted sitting, testing them both at the start of the study and following the 12-week trial. The training program successfully boosted physical fitness, increasing the participants' maximum oxygen consumption from approximately 35 to 40 millilitres per kilogram per minute.

Despite this measurable gain in aerobic capacity, the vascular system demonstrated no increased protection against prolonged sitting. Following two hours without movement, the capacity of the popliteal artery to expand deteriorated to the same degree whether participants had completed the 12-week training regime or kept their usual routine.

Vascular health and sedentary risks

The popliteal artery, situated directly behind the knee joint, is a principal blood vessel responsible for delivering oxygenated blood to the lower legs and feet. When a person remains seated quietly for extended periods, gravity and limited calf muscle contractions reduce blood flow and shear stress against the arterial walls, temporarily impairing the vessel's ability to dilate properly.

Maximum oxygen consumption, often referred to as VO2 max, is the standard physiological metric used to assess cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. High-intensity interval training relies on alternating short bursts of vigorous exercise with brief recovery periods to elevate aerobic capacity, yet these system-wide cardiorespiratory gains do not shield local leg blood vessels from the physical stagnation of sitting.

Scientific findings and workout guidance

The European Journal of Applied Physiology is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes research on human exercise mechanisms, cardiovascular responses, and occupational health. Scientists behind the study noted that good physical fitness alone is insufficient to offset the localized vascular impairment caused by continuous sitting.

Earlier research has demonstrated that combining aerobic exercise with resistance training offers protection against chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, the latest findings highlight that regular athletic training cannot replace the need to avoid prolonged periods of uninterrupted immobility throughout the day.
