French swimmer Léon Marchand won gold in the men's 400m freestyle at the European Championships in Paris on Sunday, capping a dominant individual performance for the host nation.
The 24-year-old from Toulouse stormed to victory by finishing more than a second ahead of all competitors in his first major international final at that distance, setting a new French national record.
Marchand led a successful campaign for France alongside sprinter Maxime Grousset and emerging squad members in front of a passionate home crowd. The host team finished the week with three individual titles and three relay podium finishes.
Marchand opened his championships on the first evening by anchoring the French 4x200m freestyle relay squad to a silver medal. He then captured his first European title in his signature event, the 200m butterfly, winning the final in a world-leading time for the year of 1:51.72.
In other French results, the men's 4x100m medley relay team took bronze in their final, while the women's relay team finished without a medal. Marchand achieved his victories despite suffering an adductor injury less than two months before the competition began.
Technical progress and race strategy
Speaking after his 400m freestyle victory, Marchand said he felt he had found his rhythm in the stroke and expressed a strong desire to build on his momentum. He explained that he had worked hard over the past two years on his technique, power output, and leg kicking, describing the title as a rewarding confirmation that his training was heading in the right direction.
Marchand noted that the 400m freestyle was a new race for him at the highest level and said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He explained that he attempted to start quickly to see how the race would unfold, while retaining enough strength in his legs for the final 100 meters to hold off the field.
He added that while there remained strategic details he could refine, winning the European title in the event left him with little more to request. Marchand, who represents the Toulouse club and rose to international fame during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has established himself as one of the world's premier swimmers.
Focus shifts to Beijing short-course worlds
Marchand will next turn his attention to the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Beijing, scheduled to take place from December 1 to December 6, 2026.
The swimmer confirmed that the Beijing championships represent a key goal for his season, noting that he has never previously competed in a major international short-course event. Short-course competitions are held in 25-meter pools, which place greater emphasis on turn technique and underwater pushing than standard 50-meter Olympic pools.
Marchand acknowledged that managing his preparation and personal holiday schedule ahead of the December meet would be delicate, but emphasized that he was eager to achieve success in China.
