Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez defeated tournament favorite Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4 in the third round in Toronto. Andreeva, the current Roland Garros champion, entered the match as a strong favorite before being eliminated in the round of 32.
Fernandez opened the match with a comfortable hold of serve before Andreeva fought off a break point to hold her own service game. Fernandez then won her serve and broke the Russian player in consecutive service games to build a 5-1 lead. Fernandez capitalized on her opportunity to take the opening set 6-1.
Second Set and Next Round
The host nation representative dominated the start of the second set, breaking Andreeva twice and holding serve to build a 4-0 advantage. Andreeva won the fifth game after a battle to get on the board, but Fernandez won the next game to put herself on the brink of victory.
Andreeva held serve, broke Fernandez for the first time in the match, and won her next service game to narrow the score to 5-4. Fernandez then defended her lead by winning her final service game to secure the second set 6-4 and close out the match.
Fernandez advances to the round of 16, where she will play the winner of the third-round match between Elise Mertens and Naomi Osaka.
