The Public Security Police seized a 9mm Glock 19 pistol identical to official police weapons from a rooftop in Lisbon early on Wednesday morning.
Officers found the semi-automatic handgun alongside two 6.35mm caliber pistols after responding to an emergency call reporting gunfire in a residential neighborhood.
Patrol units were dispatched at 5:00 am to Costa Malheiro street, located within the Alfredo Bensaúde social housing estate in the eastern district of Olivais. According to local residents, six men engaged in physical fighting shortly before multiple gunshots rang out. Police found no suspects or casualties at the scene, but officers discovered at least 15 bullet impacts marking the building facade, with the cache of firearms hidden on the rooftop above.
An official spokesperson for the Public Security Police confirmed the details of the dawn response and the weapon recovery to Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manhã.
Weapons recovery in Olivais
The Public Security Police, known locally as the PSP, serves as Portugal's primary civil law enforcement agency responsible for urban centers across the nation. Olivais is a large parish situated in eastern Lisbon, where public housing developments such as the Alfredo Bensaúde estate provide municipal residential accommodation. The Glock 19 pistol seized during the raid is a compact 9mm firearm widely issued to Portuguese police officers and international security forces.
Judicial Police investigation
Portugal's Judicial Police have launched an investigation into the shooting and are working to establish whether the incident is connected to a similar attack that occurred hours earlier in Amadora.
That separate incident took place at approximately 11:00 pm on Tuesday on Joaquim Luís street, in the Falagueira neighborhood of Amadora. Gunshots fired from a passing vehicle shattered the second-floor window panes of a residential apartment building. Investigators reported no injuries from the drive-by attack, which occurred northwest of the capital.
The Judicial Police, or PJ, is Portugal's specialized national agency tasked with investigating serious organized crime, gang violence, and complex criminal offenses. Amadora, a major municipality bordering Lisbon to the northwest, falls within the agency's investigative jurisdiction alongside the capital district.
