Lisbon PSP police officers arrested six pickpockets in seven days during targeted patrols across the Portuguese capital's historic center between August 21 and August 27, 2026.
The operation was conducted by a specialized team of investigators from the Public Security Police, known locally as the PSP, who focus specifically on tackling tourist-targeted theft. The six suspects detained during the week-long sting included four women and two men, all caught during routine patrols in tourist-heavy districts.
In an official statement detailing the operation, the PSP highlighted one specific arrest involving a 39-year-old male suspect who was caught red-handed stealing a mobile phone valued at 450 euros from a victim. Police records revealed that the man had been caught by officers numerous times for similar offences between 2024 and 2026.
Despite his extensive criminal record and being caught in the act, the 39-year-old suspect was released back into freedom following his latest arrest. The PSP noted that the suspect had been released under similar circumstances after each of his previous detentions over the past two years.
Targeted Police Operations in Lisbon
The PSP serves as Portugal's national civilian police force, responsible for maintaining public order and urban security in major municipal centers. In Lisbon, specialized unit officers routinely monitor historic neighborhoods such as Baixa, Chiado, and Alfama, where narrow streets and crowded public transport routes frequently attract opportunistic thieves targeting international visitors.
Street crime in Portugal's major urban centers has prompted intensified surveillance initiatives by specialized law enforcement divisions. Reporting by journalist Miguel Curado for Correio da Manhã emphasized that police patrols continue to focus on high-density pedestrian areas to disrupt pickpocketing networks.
Recent Crackdowns Across Portugal
Law enforcement efforts against organized pickpocketing have extended beyond the capital to other major tourist destinations in Portugal. In Porto, the country's second-largest city, police recently detained three pickpockets following the theft of handbags from two international tourists.
Judicial authorities have also handed down severe sentences in prominent cases involving repeat offenders in Lisbon. In one major court case, a pickpocket who supported himself entirely by robbing tourists aboard Lisbon's iconic public trams was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Further south, police operations have targeted opportunistic crime in regional entertainment districts. In Albufeira, a coastal town in the Algarve region renowned for its vibrant nightlife, officers arrested four pickpockets for committing thefts across popular evening entertainment venues.
The PSP stated that specialized investigative units will maintain active surveillance throughout high-density tourist areas across Portugal to curb property crimes and protect residents and visitors.
