Lorenzo Musetti defeats Hubert Hurkacz at Paris Masters

Lorenzo Musetti defeated Hubert Hurkacz in two tight tie-break sets at the Paris Masters, bringing the Polish player's season to an end.

The Italian world number 26 secured a 7-6(3), 7-6(10) victory over the 28th-ranked Hurkacz in the opening round of the prestigious indoor event. Musetti now advances to a demanding second-round contest against world number one Alexander Zverev.

The Paris Masters serves as the final ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the men's tennis season, offering valuable ranking points before the year-end finals. Hurkacz entered the tournament after a second-round exit in Basel, while Musetti arrived in excellent form having won a title in Lyon just weeks earlier.

Dominant serving in Paris

The opening set in the French capital was defined by strong serving from both men, with few opportunities for either returner. Hurkacz earned the solitary break point of the entire set with a chance to open up a 3-1 lead, but Musetti resisted the danger by delivering several commanding serves that the Pole could not return.

With aces at a premium yet neither player conceding ground on their delivery, the set progressed inevitably to a tie-break. Hurkacz committed costly unforced errors during the longer rallies, handing Musetti three set points. The Italian required only one, finishing the opener with an unreturnable serve.

Second set tie-break drama

The second set mirrored the first, as neither man allowed any room on return. Dominant service games kept rallies short, and the entire set produced just one deuce game. With break chances non-existent, the contest headed into another tie-break to determine the outcome.

The second tie-break proved far more combative than the first. Hurkacz showed remarkable resilience under pressure, saving three consecutive match points to prolong the encounter. Musetti kept his composure, however, and capitalised on his fourth match point to close out the victory at 12-10.

Hurkacz season recovery

The defeat marks the conclusion of Hurkacz's competitive year, closing a campaign defined by a significant late-season recovery. The 29-year-old from Wroclaw sat at 103rd in the ATP world rankings only five months ago following a deep slump in form.

Hurkacz reversed his fortunes during the recent autumn swing in Asia, reaching the final in Chengdu and the semi-finals in Beijing. His tour culminated in Shanghai, where he achieved a milestone by recording his first career victory over Novak Djokovic, lifting his ranking back inside the world top 30.

Musetti now turns his attention to the second round, where top seed Zverev awaits. The German world number one presents one of the most formidable tests on the ATP Tour, while Hurkacz begins his off-season preparations ahead of the new campaign.
