A magnetic storm has a 75 percent chance of reaching Earth within the next 24 hours, according to Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather centre.
Leus said the likely cause was a coronal mass ejection that occurred on the Sun on July 30. Forecast models show the solar wind could accelerate to 600 kilometres per second or higher, he said.
Geomagnetic disturbances are expected to reach a G1 to G2 level and last between six and nine hours.
Scientists have previously warned that magnetic storms can disrupt global satellite communications, trigger widespread power outages, and increase radiation exposure for astronauts and pilots.
In Russia, magnetic storm forecasts are produced by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at IKI and ISFZ RAS. Scientists said accurate predictions are not possible more than a few days in advance because the approach of a storm can only be detected shortly before it arrives.
