Manuel Aznar, an energy expert who helps consumers lower the cost of their electricity bills, has shared the case of one of his followers to show which charges on a bill are worth reviewing.
Aznar said the price of contracted power, the amount of power contracted for the home, and maintenance services bundled into some bills are the main areas to check. After reviewing the bill and making changes, he said the follower's payment dropped from 66.97 euros to 32.23 euros.
Checking the price of contracted power
Aznar said the price paid for contracted power, which is split between peak and off-peak periods, should add up to between 10 and 13 cents. In the case he presented, the consumer was paying more than 32 cents per kilowatt hour, while Aznar said the cheapest offers on the market were around 10, 11 and 12 cents.
He also recommended comparing the power contracted for a household against the power actually used, both of which appear on the bill. Aznar said that when there is a large gap between the two figures, each kilowatt reduced can save more than 40 euros a year, and said adjusting contracted power to match real needs can significantly cut the annual bill.
Maintenance charges that duplicate home insurance
Aznar also pointed to maintenance services that some companies include on electricity bills, which he described as "contracted maintenance" charges. His recommendation is to have them removed.
He said home insurance almost certainly already covers this kind of service, so consumers should not have to pay for it twice. Aznar recommended reviewing every item listed on a bill to check whether it is genuinely needed or whether it is already covered elsewhere.
