Dominican television presenter, architect, and the only Miss World from the country, Mariasela Álvarez, revealed on social media that she has suffered from lumbar scoliosis since age 13. The TV producer shared details of her health struggles, including a recent severe pain crisis that limited her mobility.
Álvarez began her public post by stating she was sharing something she had never spoken about publicly. As a teenager, her scoliosis required her to wear an orthopedic brace, which made her a target of bullying at school where classmates nicknamed her Robotina. She noted that she too was a victim of bullying during her school years.
Genetic Condition and Surgeries
In addition to scoliosis, Álvarez revealed that she has a genetic condition causing premature wear of body cartilage. This issue led to complications requiring surgeries on her shoulder and one elbow. She was also diagnosed with chondromalacia in both knees.
Her health problems escalated during a recent relocation of her office and home. The associated stress triggered a severe relapse lasting several months. Álvarez recounted that every morning when getting out of bed, she felt as though her waist would break. She experienced fluctuating pain throughout each day and even replaced her mattress believing it was causing the discomfort.

Due to the severe pain, Álvarez stopped exercising, leading to a loss of muscle mass that worsened her condition. She confessed feeling desperate and believing she would never lift weights again.
Recovery Through Strength Training
To address the crisis, Álvarez received medical treatment and completed ten physical therapy sessions. Approximately a month ago, she gradually resumed strength training with her trainer, stating her belief that strengthening muscles is essential to protect joints over time.
Álvarez described exercise as her lifeline for many situations and said she cannot imagine life without it. She began training consistently at age 35 after the birth of her third daughter, maintaining the discipline ever since as a core part of her lifestyle.
Message of Hope and Encouragement
Through her revelation, Álvarez aimed to send a message of hope to people living with health conditions or physical limitations. She stated that it is never too late to start exercising and that there are no excuses, asking her followers not to attribute her physical condition to good genetics now that her diagnoses are public.
Her post prompted widespread reactions across social media platforms. Followers and public figures expressed admiration for her frankness in sharing her personal experience and promoting physical activity for health and quality of life.
