Mateusz Żukowski scored a consolation goal for 1.FC Magdeburg as his side suffered a 6-1 defeat against Eintracht Braunschweig in the 2. Bundesliga opener.
Braunschweig took a quick 3-0 lead through an Aaron Opoku goal in the 15th minute followed by a Jan Urbich double in the 21st and 26th minutes. Magdeburg defender Herbert Bockhorn was sent off with a red card in the 31st minute before Mehmet Aydin made it 0-4 before half-time.

Żukowski scored in the 49th minute following a three-on-two counterattack. Baris Atik received the ball on the left wing and crossed into the penalty area, where the 24-year-old Polish forward slid past the goalkeeper to score.
Samuele Di Benedetto restored the four-goal lead for Braunschweig a minute later, and Florian Flick set the final score at 1-6 in the 61st minute. Żukowski was substituted for Richmond Tachie in the 81st minute.
Prior to the match, the club announced on social media that Żukowski extended his contract until 2029, stating they were hugely delighted he was staying. Żukowski was the discovery of the previous 2. Bundesliga season, attracting interest from higher division scouts after scoring 17 goals to finish as the league's third top scorer.
Magdeburg finished 14th last season with two points more than Braunschweig in 15th, who tied on points with second-from-bottom Fortuna Duesseldorf. Magdeburg play their next 2. Bundesliga match on Saturday, August 15 against Osnabruck, who lost 3-4 to Heidenheim in their first game.
