American ice hockey player Mitchell Miller has spoken about his initial anxieties before moving to Russia, admitting he was nervous due to media propaganda.
Speaking to Russian sports website Sports.ru, the Ak Bars Kazan player said he did not know what to expect when he first arrived in the country. He explained that reporting on television and news broadcasts in the West had created uncertainty, but added that Kazan proved to be more beautiful than many cities in the United States.
Miller also discussed his progress in adapting to the local environment and learning the Russian language. He noted that he already understands all the vulgar words in Russian because he hears them frequently, adding that while he finds the terms amusing, he makes an effort not to laugh when hearing them.
Life in Kazan and the Kontinental Hockey League
Miller plays for Ak Bars Kazan, one of the most prominent ice hockey clubs in Russia competing in the Kontinental Hockey League. Kazan, located in western Russia as the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, is a major cultural and athletic center in the region.

The American athlete is not the only player in the league to speak publicly about cultural adjustments and personal anxieties when competing abroad. Russian forward Danil Gushchin, who plays for Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the Kontinental Hockey League, previously shared his own concerns regarding life in North America.
Gushchin, who previously played in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks, disclosed that he had experienced a persistent fear of American police officers. The athlete noted that law enforcement officers had pulled him over on several occasions while he was driving in the United States.
