Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has appointed former Revolutionary Guards chief Mohsen Rezai as secretary of Iran's supreme national security council, the presidency announced. Mehdi Tabatabai, spokesman for the president's office, specified the appointment in a post on platform X. Rezai replaces Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr at the leadership of the supreme national security council.
Rezai background and statement on Hormuz
Zolghadr will become political adviser to the supreme leader, according to an announcement issued today by the office of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. Rezai, 71, led the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's ideological army, from 1981 to 1997. He later held important positions within the political system before being appointed military adviser to Ayatollah Khamenei in March.
In July, Rezai stated regarding the Strait of Hormuz that it was more important than atomic bombs, referring to Iran's nuclear program. Tehran has blocked the strait, which has served for months as a focus of tensions with the United States.
