Morgan Freeman Calls Bonfire of the Vanities a Nightmare

Morgan Freeman has described the movie adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities as a nightmare that should be remade from scratch.

The Oscar-winning actor expressed deep disappointment with director Brian De Palma's film adaptation, revealing that the original satirical book by Tom Wolfe was one of his favorite novels.

Freeman said the production went so wrong that filmmakers would need to start over from the beginning to make it properly, according to statements cited by French film site AlloCiné and reported by German media outlet Filmstarts.

The cinematic project originally arrived with high expectations across Hollywood. Wolfe's satirical novel was initially published in serial installments in Rolling Stone magazine before becoming a massive commercial bestseller.

To bring the book to the big screen, studio executives hired De Palma, the director behind crime classics such as Scarface. The production assembled an impressive ensemble cast, bringing Freeman together with major Hollywood stars Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith for what was planned as a prestige release.

Box Office Flop and Critical Reception

Despite the high-profile combination of a bestselling author, a famous director, and a stellar cast, the movie turned out to be a major box office failure. Worldwide box office receipts reached only 15.6 million dollars against a production budget estimated at roughly 47 million dollars.

The large difference between the film's budget and its theatrical gross underscored the significant financial deficit, though box office numbers alone do not account for the entire economic outcome of the project.

Critical reaction to the black humor social satire was similarly negative. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes currently registers just 15 percent positive reviews for the movie.

The film featured Hanks as an unscrupulous Wall Street banker, a role that stood in stark contrast to his established public image as an affable leading man. Critics and moviegoers alike responded unfavorably to the overall adaptation.

Cast Discontent and Remake Hopes

Freeman was not the only cast member to express dissatisfaction with the finished film. Filmstarts noted that previous reports quoted Hanks ranking the project among the worst movies ever made, while Willis publicly voiced regret over taking part in the production.

For Freeman, his personal attachment to Wolfe's novel gave his disappointment a unique dimension. His frustration was directed not at the source material, but at how the book was translated to the screen.

Although Freeman voiced a desire for filmmakers to throw out the original version and adapt the book correctly from the ground up, no new film adaptation of the novel has been produced.
