The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in Moscow warned residents that rain, thunderstorms and strong winds will strike the capital on Tuesday evening, August 11. Meteorologists at Roshydromet forecast thunderstorms, rain and wind gusts reaching up to 15 meters per second between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Emergency officials cautioned that the storm could damage power lines and reinforced advertising structures. Tree falls may block traffic, damage motor vehicles and increase injuries among the population. Localized flooding across certain areas and roadways could also cause vehicle traffic disruptions. The ministry reminded residents of the risk of lightning strikes on objects that lack lightning rods.
Safety guidance for drivers and pedestrians
Officials called on drivers in the capital to exercise care and caution in adverse weather conditions. Drivers were urged to significantly reduce speed, increase distance from vehicles ahead, avoid sudden maneuvers such as overtaking, changing lanes or passing, and park away from trees.
Pedestrians outdoors were advised to steer clear of advertising billboards and unstable structures, avoid sheltering under trees and refrain from leaving children unattended.
Earlier, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, said no more hot weather is expected in the capital region this season. Tishkovets urged Muscovites to prepare for a shift toward colder weather.
