Netflix has officially announced a new live-action prequel series titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, expanding the sci-fi franchise into the 1950s.
The streaming platform confirmed the project on Stranger Things Day, November 6, marking the calendar date associated with the disappearance of Will Byers in the first season of the original show, which was set in 1983.
Set across the desert landscapes of Nevada, the upcoming series will follow a brand new storyline featuring fresh characters while introducing mysteries connected directly to the flagship television series.

Setting and storyline in 1950s Nevada
The events of Other Worlds will take place roughly two years before the scientific experiment depicted in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that the concept first originated during production of the fourth season of Stranger Things, which was released in the summer of 2022.
Matt Duffer told Deadline exactly one year ago that the team was moving forward with the plan and that Netflix executives finally knew what the project was about.
In an interview with Variety the previous November, Duffer disclosed that the spin-off would explain the origin and significance of a mysterious stone that a young Henry Creel discovers inside a scientist's briefcase in Nevada caves.

Origin of the mysterious cave stone
That particular relic made its first appearance in the stage production The First Shadow before later being featured during the fifth season of Stranger Things.
According to the series creator, the new television production will provide answers to several lingering questions that remained unresolved following the conclusion of the main series.
The project is designed to illuminate a previously unexplored era of the Stranger Things universe by detailing events that predate both the original 1980s television drama and the stage play.
Jinny Howe, the head of scripted series for Netflix in the United States and Canada, emphasised that the new production would allow viewers to discover a different dimension of the story's world.
Howe explained that the narrative would be set in the 1950s while preserving the mystery, emotional resonance and visual spectacle that established the original programme as a worldwide hit, but with an entirely new plot and fresh cast members.
The expanding Stranger Things franchise
The announcement of Other Worlds represents the next major step in developing the franchise, coming roughly one year after the main Stranger Things series concluded in late 2025.
Magazine publisher People reported on November 6, 2026, that the prequel series had been confirmed by Netflix exactly one year after the original television broadcast came to an end.
The project stands as the fourth official production in the shared universe, joining the original live-action series, the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from '85, and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The stage production centres on the early life of Henry Creel, revealing key details of his youth in Hawkins, Indiana, before his transformation into Vecna, one of the central villains of the overarching story.
First launched in 2016, Stranger Things became a cornerstone cultural property for Netflix, chronicling supernatural occurrences, Cold War government conspiracies and alternate dimensions in a small Midwestern community.
Creative transition from Netflix to Paramount
The greenlight for Other Worlds arrives during a significant period of professional transition for the show's creators.
Following the expiration of their exclusive overall agreement with Netflix in April 2026, the Duffer brothers signed a multi-year creative partnership with Paramount covering feature films and television series.
Despite their relocation to Paramount, Other Worlds will remain on Netflix as part of the contractual commitments the brothers established under their prior agreement with the streaming company.
The release ensures that the Duffer brothers maintain their creative relationship with Netflix, the company where they originally created and developed their defining television franchise.
