Neurologists have advised against discarding egg yolks, warning that eating only egg whites deprives the body of essential brain-boosting nutrients, according to Parade.
The experts highlighted choline as a vital compound in egg yolks that the body relies on to manufacture a key neurotransmitter involved in memory, concentration, and learning.
Choline is also necessary for supporting the protective sheath of nerve fibers. In addition, eggs contain tryptophan, an amino acid that acts as a precursor to serotonin and is involved in mood regulation.
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that send signals between nerve cells across the nervous system. Parade, an American lifestyle publication, regularly reports on health and nutrition advice from medical professionals.
Nutrients and brain protection
Omega-3 fatty acids in eggs are necessary for the normal function of nervous system cells and the control of inflammatory processes. Eggs also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two nutrients widely recognized for supporting eye health.
In addition to eye care, lutein and zeaxanthin have antioxidant properties that can protect brain tissues from oxidative stress. Because a significant portion of these brain-healthy nutrients is located in the yolk, experts strongly recommend not throwing the yolk away.
Recommended food combinations
Despite their health benefits, eggs contain practically no dietary fiber, leading specialists to recommend pairing them with other foods. A spinach omelet offers a good option, as leafy greens provide fiber, folate, and vitamin K alongside lutein and zeaxanthin.
Adding salmon to eggs further increases the breakfast content of omega-3 fatty acids and protein. For a more balanced diet, experts also suggest Greek yogurt, nuts, blueberries, and avocado. Yogurt supplies protein and probiotics, nuts deliver healthy fats and antioxidants, blueberries add antioxidants and fiber, and avocado provides fiber and healthy fats.
Boiling methods and vitamin absorption
The advice follows a previous report by UNIAN, a Ukrainian news agency, on how to eat eggs for full absorption of vitamin D. Dietitians noted that while eggs naturally contain fat, pairing them with additional healthy fats aids better vitamin D absorption.
Chefs have also given a clear answer regarding how long to boil eggs to achieve a soft, runny, or hard yolk. Culinary experts noted that cooks commonly use two preparation methods: placing eggs directly into boiling water or starting them in cold water.
