A new film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles and Fiona Shaw, opens in UK and Irish cinemas on Friday, September 25.

The film is based on Austen's debut novel and follows two sisters navigating love and heartbreak within the strict social rules of 18th-century Britain. Elder sister Elinor Dashwood, played by Edgar-Jones, is guided by her practical head, while younger sister Marianne Dashwood, played by Creed-Miles, is driven by her passionate heart.

Cast reunites after 2018
Edgar-Jones leads the cast as Elinor alongside Creed-Miles as Marianne, with the pair reuniting on screen after previously working together in 2018. They are joined by a supporting cast that includes Fiona Shaw and Irish actress Caitríona Balfe.

George MacKay and Frank Dillane appear as the sisters' potential suitors, alongside Herbert Nordrum. Bodhi Rae Breathnach, known for Hamnet, plays Margaret, the youngest Dashwood sister.

Screenplay preserves Austen's original quotes
The screenplay, adapted for the screen by writer Diana Reid, retains Austen's wit alongside quotes taken directly from the original novel. Austen, one of literature's most celebrated authors, is known for blending comedy and romantic tension with a satisfying ending, and the film aims to preserve that balance of sharp wit, light-hearted charm and emotional stakes.

Director and production team
The film is directed by Georgia Oakley and comes from the producers behind 2005's Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, and 2020's Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy. It is made by production company Working Title, whose credits include Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, About a Boy and Love Actually.
Landscapes, estates and costumes
The film features sweeping English landscapes and the lavish estates of its characters, along with elaborate period costumes and gowns. The story also shows the Dashwood sisters resisting passive domesticity rather than simply waiting for suitors to arrive.
