Polish boxer Nikolas Pawlik missed out on a medal at the European Boxing Championships in Sofia after losing his quarter-final bout 5:0 to Russian opponent Viacheslav Rogozin.
The 21-year-old was one victory away from securing a podium finish in the Bulgarian capital before falling to Rogozin by unanimous decision. During the opening round, Pawlik faced a new challenge when blood appeared on his face, requiring immediate ringside medical assistance for a cut above his eyebrow.
Speaking to Polish newspaper Fakt after the bout, Pawlik explained that the injury was a minor cut despite being the first eyebrow cut of his 14-year boxing career. He noted that he had always managed to avoid such injuries in the past, adding that he would receive stitches from a doctor before focusing on his recovery.
Pawlik acknowledged his disappointment at falling just short of a championship medal, which had been a major career goal. He stated that both he and his coaches believed in his chances, though not everything worked as planned during the fight. He added that while he left the ring defeated, he intended to return stronger in future competitions.
Path to the quarter-finals
Pawlik reached the quarter-finals following two impressive victories in earlier rounds. He opened his tournament campaign with a 5:0 unanimous decision victory over Gabor Virgan of Hungary. He then produced a surprising 4:1 win against Ukrainian fighter Maksym Zymenko, who had entered the bout as a clear favourite.
Zymenko won the European youth championship in April 2024 and regularly competes in the Polish Boxing League. Pawlik dominated the high-caliber opponent throughout their contest to set up the decisive bout against Rogozin.
Polish team success in Sofia
Despite Pawlik's exit, the tournament in Bulgaria has brought success for the Polish national boxing team. Four female boxers from Poland have already guaranteed themselves medals at the event.
The guaranteed medalists include Elżbieta Wójcik in the over 80kg category, Natalia Kuczewska at 51kg, Kinga Krówka at 65kg, and Angelika Krysztoforska at 48kg. Further medal opportunities remain open for the team as competition continues.
The European Boxing Championships bring together top amateur fighters across multiple weight categories to compete for continental titles. Amateur boxing matches feature three three-minute rounds, with five ringside judges scoring each round to decide the winner by unanimous or split decision.
