Norwegian sports journalist Jan Petter Saltvedt called the decision to readmit Russian skiers to international events under a neutral status a cowardly intermediate step.
Saltvedt said the neutral status granted by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation is merely an illusion before athletes make a full return with their national symbols.
In statements reported by Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Saltvedt argued that neutral status provides only a false sense of restriction because the outcome depends entirely on the specific terms of the declaration athletes must sign. He called the format a temporary and rather cowardly phase prior to a complete return that will eventually restore national colors and the national anthem.
Federation decisions and athlete clearance
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation decided to permit Russian athletes to compete in international tournaments under a neutral status starting from the upcoming season. The federation had already begun allowing select individual Russian competitors to participate in events under neutral conditions since late last year.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation, known internationally as FIS, is the highest governing body for ski and snowboard sports worldwide. Based in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland, FIS oversees major international competitions, including the FIS Cross-Country World Cup and world championship events. Cross-country skiing is one of the most prominent winter sports in Norway, where decisions regarding athlete participation attract intense public and media scrutiny.
Olympic committee rulings and sports context
The federation decision follows key rulings made by international sports governing bodies earlier in the summer. On July 7, the International Olympic Committee canceled its formal recommendations to international federations and sports event organizers regarding restrictions on Russian participation. In addition, the Olympic Committee of Russia was temporarily reinstated.
