Greece's ruling party youth organization ONNED has released a satirical Instagram video attacking former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and his new political venture.
The youth wing posted the short film on its official Instagram account on Thursday evening, September 3, 2026. The video was given the title Rebranding for Nothing: A Short Film about Alexis Tsipras.
Officials from the organization said ONNED used humor and a short film format to comment on the former leader returning to the political scene. The video release followed a presentation by Tsipras on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, where he outlined the economic program of his new political party.
Criticism of Political Substance
ONNED officials emphasized that the heavily promoted rebranding effort appeared to focus on public image rather than political substance. They stated that the presentation of the economic program was reminiscent of 2015, featuring identical promises that were made at the time and ultimately remained unfulfilled.
The group noted that although the packaging, promotional videos, and communication strategy had changed, the underlying political content remained familiar. ONNED said this lack of new content was the reason behind the video's conclusion that the rebranding was for nothing.
Background on Alexis Tsipras
Tsipras served as prime minister of Greece from January 2015 to July 2019. He previously led the Coalition of the Radical Left, known as SYRIZA, for fifteen years before stepping down as leader in June 2023 following parliamentary election defeats to New Democracy.
The political reference to 2015 relates to the height of the Greek government debt crisis. Tsipras was initially elected on a platform opposed to European austerity measures, before his government agreed to a third international bailout package with European creditors later that year.
New Democracy and ONNED
ONNED, short for the Youth Organization of New Democracy, is the youth wing of Greece's governing center-right political party. New Democracy has been in government since 2019 under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The youth organization frequently utilizes digital social media campaigns, political commentary, and online videos to challenge opposition parties and debate national economic policy in Greece.
