Apostolos Papastamos finished sixth and Panagiotis Vlachogiannakos finished seventh in the 400m individual medley final at the European Swimming Championships in Paris.

Papastamos, who won the European title two years ago in Belgrade, fought to reach the medals. He was in fourth place at the 350m mark but could not close the gap on the leading three swimmers.

Final times

Papastamos ultimately placed sixth with a time of 4:14.99. Vlachogiannakos finished seventh in 4:16.12.

The gold medal went to Ilia Borodin for the second time in his career. The 23-year-old Russian, who is competing as an independent athlete, won in 4:08.17.

Championship record broken

Borodin's winning time broke the championship record that had stood since 2008, when it was set by Laszlo Cseh. Italy's Alberto Razzetti finished second in 4:10.40, and Britain's Max Litchfield took third in 4:11.58.
