Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis stated that Alexis Tsipras has remained unchanged following his press conference at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair. Marinakis released an official statement criticizing the former prime minister after Tsipras addressed journalists at the annual fair in northern Greece.
Marinakis said anyone who watched the press conference reached the conclusion that the much discussed rebranding of Tsipras was simply wasted money. The spokesman added that Tsipras remains consistently unchanged and exactly the same.
Pavlos Marinakis serves as the official spokesman for the ruling New Democracy government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Alexis Tsipras previously served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2015 to 2019 and led the Coalition of the Radical Left, known as SYRIZA. The Thessaloniki International Fair is Greece's primary annual political and commercial venue where political leaders traditionally outline their economic strategies.
Dispute Over Economic Program
In subsequent comments, Marinakis characterized the economic program presented by Tsipras in Thessaloniki as a monument of political fraud. The government spokesman asserted that the economic promises made during the conference lacked financial credibility.
Sources within the Ministry of Finance released detailed figures challenging the economic estimates presented by Tsipras. Ministry sources stated that Tsipras announced policy measures costing 40 billion euros over a four year period while presenting them to the public with an estimated cost of only 7.5 billion euros. The ministry issued financial tables to support its cost analysis.
New Democracy official Tasos Chatzivasileiou described the address by Tsipras as a recital of populism. Chatzivasileiou added that the role of the government is to build agreements in the national interest rather than make unviable financial promises.
Political analyst Yannis Drymiotis also commented on the address, remarking that the economic presentation by Tsipras reminded him of the traditional theatrical dialogue between Karagiozis and Hatziavatis concerning gold sovereigns.
Political Coalitions and Opposition Debate
Addressing potential political cooperation, Marinakis stated that the only political force the governing party could negotiate with at the same table is PASOK. Marinakis described any discussion of political cooperation with former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras as utopian.
During his appearance at the fair, Tsipras made overtures toward PASOK, stating that his movement and PASOK are not opponents but competitors in the political arena. PASOK is Greece's traditional center left social democratic party.
Dimitris Koutsoumbas, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece, criticized the timing of the presentation. Koutsoumbas stated that Tsipras arrived at the Thessaloniki International Fair before Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and effectively rolled out the carpet for him.
Beyond his formal press conference, Tsipras toured the exhibition halls across the Thessaloniki fairgrounds. Video footage showed Tsipras visiting various pavilions, where he was presented with a sports jersey bearing the number 26 and wore a traditional Pontic tie. During the tour, Tsipras greeted European Commissioner Margaritis Schinas and PASOK politician Manolis Christodoulakis.
Government Economic Outlook and Regional Security
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined the government's economic strategy, stating that collective economic progress translates directly into individual prosperity, higher wages, and quality jobs. Mitsotakis published details of a new progress agreement leading up to 2030, describing it as a coherent plan for better incomes and social support.
Minister of State Akis Skertsos presented wage statistics based on Eurostat data. Skertsos stated that Greek wages in 2025 align with levels seen in Portugal rather than Bulgaria. Meanwhile, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis defended previous statements on the economy, claiming his assertion that Greece is experiencing a period of prosperity had been altered in a populist manner.
On the international stage, Mitsotakis met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the Great Sea Interconnector, a submarine electrical cable project connecting Greece and Cyprus, alongside participation from investment firm Meridiam. The United States Department of State separately highlighted defense cooperation under exercise Achilles Shield, stating that collaboration between Greece and Israel advances shared security goals. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias added that Cyprus and Greece form an axis of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, while Mitsotakis prepared for a weekend visit to Kastellorizo for the 83rd anniversary of the island's liberation.
Cultural Meetings and Additional Platform Presentations
Cultural and diplomatic discussions also took place alongside the fair. International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, referred to in reports as Amal Alamuddin, visited Athens to discuss the Parthenon Sculptures housed in the British Museum. Clooney met with Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion and held a noon meeting with Parliament President Konstantinos Tasoulas before attending an official dinner featuring speaker Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis.
Other political figures presented platforms at the Thessaloniki event. Maria Karystianou introduced the official program for the movement known as Hope for Democracy. Meanwhile, political figure Aphrodite Latinopoulou issued a back to school message wishing students a successful year, criticizing long decorative nails and advocating for the return of school uniforms.
