Economy Minister Elmer Cuba announced that the government is evaluating a proposal to move all annual holidays to Fridays, with the exception of July 28, Christmas, and New Year's Day, to improve rest planning.
Cuba, who heads the Ministry of Economy and Finance, explained that the measure aims to optimize holidays at the margin and establish greater annual control over scheduled time off.
Speaking at a press conference, Cuba said that knowing which holidays fall on Fridays at the start of the year allows people to better plan their family and work rest. He added that companies across all tourism sectors would also be able to organize their purchasing more effectively.
Concerns over labor benefits
The proposal follows an initial draft of a request for legislative powers, in which the executive branch originally intended to eliminate public holidays altogether. That earlier draft generated concern among some deputies regarding the potential reduction of labor benefits for workers.
