Peru’s government has signed an agreement with Caja Huancayo to rebuild housing in Chupaca, Junín, through a Works for Taxes mechanism, President Keiko Fujimori announced.
Fujimori said 22 million soles would be used to begin emergency housing construction after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Junín killed five people and left hundreds displaced. She told residents of Chupaca that reconstruction would not be immediate but that it would happen.
The president said ministers from the Education, Health, Production and Labour portfolios would arrive in the Junín region within hours to address the demands of those affected. She added that a technical committee would be established and called for more companies to participate through the Works for Taxes scheme.
Fujimori also announced that 500 housing modules currently located in northern Peru would be relocated to shelter families left without homes. The units will include thermal insulation to protect residents from the high temperatures of the highlands.
