Emergency personnel responded to the scene to conduct rescue operations following the collapse. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region said eight emergency workers and two pieces of equipment were deployed to the location.

The press service of the emergency department confirmed the fatality but did not disclose further details regarding the identity of the victim or whether other occupants sustained injuries.

Rescue operations and regional context

Pervomaysk is an urban locality and administrative centre located in the southern part of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, approximately 170 kilometres south of the regional capital of Nizhny Novgorod. Emergency responses throughout the region are coordinated by the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, known as EMERCOM, which handles civil defence, search and rescue, and fire response operations across Russia.

Previous building collapse in Kazan

The fatality in Pervomaysk follows a separate structural collapse in the city of Kazan, where a woman was taken to hospital after being struck by falling wall fragments during building demolition.

Work to dismantle the former Planeta Fitness club on Hadi Taktash Street took an unexpected turn when one of the walls began crumbling, taking construction workers by surprise. A falling piece of debris struck a female pedestrian who was walking past the building, and she was taken away by ambulance.

Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers in western Russia. The major urban centre lies approximately 300 kilometres east of Nizhny Novgorod and is one of the largest economic and cultural hubs in the Volga Federal District.
