The Philadelphia Phillies acquired three-time Major League Baseball batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants just hours before Monday's trade deadline, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian also joined Arraez in leaving San Francisco for Philadelphia. In return, the Phillies sent top minor league pitching prospect Ramon Marquez and reliever Marty Glair to the Giants.

Arraez will now join his fifth team in five years. The move kickstarted what was expected to be a busy day of deals before the deadline struck at 6pm EST.

In a separate trade earlier Monday, the Phillies also acquired left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the New York Mets, sending Luke Gabrysh and John Spikerman to New York.

Arraez is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. He is expected to command a huge salary as he approaches what should be the peak of his powers at age 29.

A gold-glove second baseman

The Venezuelan star returned to second base in San Francisco this season and has cemented his spot as one of the best defensive players at the position. He previously played first base for the San Diego Padres in 2024 and 2025 but has since made clear he prefers second base.

Multiple reports on Monday said Philadelphia plans to use Arraez at his preferred position, which would likely push Bryson Stott to third base, Alec Bohm to first base, and Bryce Harper to the outfield.

Arraez won the batting title in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins, then again in 2023 and 2024 with the Miami Marlins. He is a four-time All-Star and is in the middle of a big season at the plate, hitting324, the best mark in the National League and second in all of the major leagues only to Yordan Alvarez's330.

He doesn't often hit the ball out of the park, with just four home runs this season, but he is one of the league's best at putting the ball in play.

More deadline day moves

Elsewhere on trade deadline day, the Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-hander Jose Soriano in a deal with the Los Angeles Angels. Top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero went to Los Angeles in return.
