Post-Heatwave Fatigue: Why Severe Heat Leaves People Tired

Professor of medicine Bertrand Fougère warned on French television station TF1 that consecutive summer heatwaves cause severe lingering fatigue and sleep disruption. Fougère spoke on the morning news show Bonjour! La Matinale TF1 after temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius across five heatwaves in a row this summer.

The prolonged heat has triggered widespread health problems, broken sleep patterns, and forced many people to stop playing sports. Fougère explained that individuals must rebalance their routines and bodies to recover physical fitness after enduring relentless high temperatures.

Effects of High Temperatures on Human Body

Extreme heat places intense physical strain on the human body as internal thermoregulation systems work constantly to cool down core temperatures. When ambient temperatures surpass 40 degrees Celsius, the heart pumps higher volumes of blood to the skin surface to release excess heat, raising cardiovascular stress even during minimal activity.

High nighttime temperatures prevent the body from achieving the natural temperature drop required for restorative sleep stages. This chronic sleep deprivation leaves the brain and central nervous system unrested, causing persistent daytime tiredness that lingers long after a heatwave ends.

Halting regular exercise during severe heat waves also contributes to lingering lethargy. While avoiding strenuous physical activity in extreme temperatures protects against heat exhaustion and heatstroke, extended periods of inactivity reduce muscular endurance and lower overall energy levels.

Recovery and Post-Heatwave Health Advice

Fougère emphasized that recovering from repeated heatwaves requires deliberate effort to restore physical balance. Medical professionals recommend gradually rebuilding physical fitness, maintaining consistent hydration, and re-establishing structured sleep routines as outdoor temperatures return to seasonal averages.

TF1 is the primary national commercial television network in France, broadcasting news and morning programming across the country. Its morning show Bonjour! La Matinale TF1 regularly features health segments where medical experts address timely public health concerns affecting viewers.
