Psychologists Explain Why People Snooze Alarms Daily

Psychologist Gabriela Otero says people who keep hitting snooze aren't lazy, they lack confidence to face the day's responsibilities.

Psychologists Explain Why People Snooze Alarms Daily

Millions of people hit the snooze button on their phone alarm every single morning, and psychologists say the habit reveals something far more specific than simple laziness. According to experts, repeatedly delaying an alarm points to low confidence in facing the day's responsibilities.

The behavior follows a familiar pattern: a person dislikes the sound of the alarm and keeps pushing it back until they feel ready to get up. At first glance, this can look like a simple sign of poor rest. But psychologists have studied the habit more closely to understand why some people cannot stop doing it every morning.

What psychology says about repeat snoozers

Clinical psychologist Gabriela Otero, speaking to the portal Glamour, offered an explanation rooted in procrastination, the tendency to delay or put off important responsibilities.

Otero said the brain's limbic system, described as the center of pleasure, instinct and emotion, does not respond to concepts such as responsibility, commitment or discipline. Staying in bed and letting the alarm keep ringing, she said, symbolizes pleasure, comfort and security instead.

Otero added that the habit has a direct impact on a person's self-confidence, because someone who repeatedly delays their alarm does not feel secure enough to take on challenges, tasks or other responsibilities they face.

In her explanation, when a person postpones their alarm frequently, the brain interprets it as a sign that they lack the capacity to complete even the first task of the day: getting out of bed.

A sign of stress, other research suggests

Other psychological research cited in the report points to a second explanation: the habit can also reflect the emotional state of the person doing it. Under this view, someone snoozes their alarm as a response to the stress caused by everything else they have pending that day.

Together, the two explanations suggest that the habit is less about how tired someone is and more about how they feel toward the demands waiting for them once they are awake.

How to avoid snoozing frequently

The report also laid out several steps recommended to help people stop relying on the snooze button:

  • Avoid screens for 90 minutes before sleeping, so melatonin production is not blocked.
  • Keep the bedroom cool, dark and comfortable.
  • Place the alarm clock away from the bed.
  • Seek out sunlight as soon as you wake up.
  • If you slip up, avoid guilt and self-criticism.
