Qualcomm has unveiled its 2-nanometer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Elite Extreme Gen 6 mobile processors in Hawaii to power 2027 flagship smartphones.

Qualcomm unveils 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips

Qualcomm has launched its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 mobile processors at its annual summit in Hawaii.

The San Diego-based semiconductor manufacturer introduced the two flagship chips in Maui during its Snapdragon Summit 2026, marking the company's transition to a 2-nanometer manufacturing process designed to power top-tier Android smartphones in 2027.

Both new platforms feature custom Qualcomm Oryon central processing unit cores capable of reaching clock speeds up to 5.0 GHz. They are built specifically to handle agentic artificial intelligence tasks directly on mobile hardware.

The launch introduces a dual-flagship approach for Qualcomm's highest-tier mobile silicon. Alongside the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, the company introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 to serve as its top-tier offering for premium mobile experiences.

Both processors share the same underlying electronic foundation, incorporating custom Oryon CPU cores, a completely redesigned Adreno graphics processing unit, and an advanced Hexagon neural processing unit. The architecture aims to maximize performance and on-device intelligence across processing, mobile gaming, wireless connectivity, and digital photography.

Speaking at the event in Maui, Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said the presentation marked a milestone by introducing two flagship platforms delivering immediate, personal, and adaptive agentic AI experiences. Patrick said that as the era of agentic AI evolves, a multi-flagship strategy allows Qualcomm to push mobile boundaries while bringing AI innovations to a broader range of premium hardware. He added that designing two distinct platforms provides original equipment manufacturers with greater flexibility while shaping next-generation smart mobile experiences.

According to Qualcomm, offering two distinct processor models allows the company to bring its premium mobile experiences to a wider audience. The standard Elite model targets high-end handsets seeking to contain component costs, enabling Qualcomm to compete more effectively against rival chipmakers.

Qualcomm's new chips enter a competitive market alongside MediaTek's recently announced Dimensity 9600 Pro processor. The platforms are also set to compete against Samsung's upcoming 10-core Exynos 2700 processor.

AI Architecture and Extreme Gaming Features

The higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 includes specialized hardware designed for intensive artificial intelligence and graphics workloads. The processor introduces Adreno Neural Fusion technology, which uses artificial intelligence to enhance game graphics, visual immersion, and energy efficiency for longer gaming sessions.

The Extreme variant also features dedicated Adreno matrix AI cores capable of running advanced artificial intelligence models. It incorporates 18 MB of high-performance memory to support demanding computational tasks.

On-device artificial intelligence capabilities differ between the two chips. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 utilizes a redesigned Hexagon NPU that understands personal context across devices, anticipates user needs with adaptive agents, and learns over time. It also supports prompt-free photo editing directly on the device.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 upgrades these capabilities with a new Hexagon Element accelerator. The NPU on the Extreme platform is engineered for advanced agentic AI with deeper contextual understanding, significantly higher on-device processing performance, and support for Mixture of Experts models containing more than 30 billion parameters. It also includes 50 percent more shared memory than the standard flagship platform.

System Performance and Graphics Specifications

Performance metrics for both platforms highlight high-frequency processing and energy efficiency. The custom Oryon CPU inside the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 delivers clock speeds reaching 5.0 GHz for multitasking across work, entertainment, and creative applications.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 enhances system-level performance across mobile gaming, content creation, and AI workloads. The Extreme platform also introduces the world's first global low-energy VVC codec for video playback and streaming.

Graphics capabilities on both chips are powered by a next-generation Adreno GPU architecture. The standard Elite chip features AI-driven graphics enhancements, responsive controls, and the full suite of Snapdragon Elite Gaming technologies. The Extreme model builds on these features with its dedicated matrix AI cores and frame generation capabilities powered by Adreno Neural Fusion.

Spectra Camera ISP and 5G Connectivity

Mobile photography on both processors is managed by the new Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor. The ISP introduces Intelligent Pixel Control, which uses scene understanding to improve image processing quality without requiring higher optical component costs.

The Spectra camera system also includes an Elite Color Engine with 3D lookup table support, Intelligent Stabilization, and Motion Intelligence. Both platforms support cinematic-quality video recording with professional APV video compatibility.

Camera specifications for the platform include support for 8K video recording at 60 frames per second. The system also supports Ultra HD 4K slow-motion video capture at up to 240 frames per second.

Wireless communications across both chips are driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X105 5G Modem-RF system, which Qualcomm described as bringing mobile connectivity closer to 6G standards. Connectivity is further enhanced by artificial intelligence algorithms through FastConnect 8800 technology, improving overall connection speed and stability.
