Greek actress Renia Louizidou has revealed she will take a break from theater performances this season but insisted she cannot afford to stop working entirely.
Speaking on the morning television show Happy Day on Wednesday, September 30, the veteran performer described herself as a secret lazy person who enjoys resting, but noted that acting remains her profession and primary source of income.
Louizidou explained that while she has built a long career in Greek entertainment, she does not belong to the category of privileged professionals who can choose to take a full year off from work.
Financial realities of acting
The actress stated that she considers herself fortunate to be well compensated for her theatrical work, which has allowed her to step away from the stage for the current season. However, she emphasized that complete professional absence remains out of reach.
Reflecting on industry earnings, Louizidou noted that while some actors, including herself, are paid very well for their work, a large number of professionals in the field receive wages that barely cover their living expenses. She clarified that she was not complaining about her own situation, expressing gratitude for her multi-year career which now allows her to pause stage work at her current age.
Stepping aside for younger actors
Discussing her current criteria for choosing roles, Louizidou expressed a deliberate desire to make room for a younger generation of performers. She explained that she is at a stage in her life where it is appropriate not to retire, but to step to the side so that rising actors can take on the main burden of leading roles.
Louizidou added that taking on slightly smaller roles gives her great pleasure and reflects the natural cycle of life. She remarked that she would no longer play young romantic leads, opting instead to play mother characters, a shift she insisted does not bother her in the slightest.
Self-critique and screen performance
Addressing her habits when appearing in television series, Louizidou revealed that she regularly watches her own broadcasts to analyze her performance and correct mistakes. She stated that her motivation is self-improvement rather than self-admiration.
The actress noted that her focus remains strictly on acting technique, as she cannot reverse the passage of time regarding her appearance. She observed that if lines are not delivered properly or a scene is poorly acted, cosmetic details such as hair or false eyelashes cannot save the performance.
