Russia has banned cryptocurrency mining in Moscow, with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signing a decree that also prohibits residents of affected regions from participating in mining pools. The document was published on Russia’s official legal information portal.
In Kursk Oblast, the ban applies to the Belovsky, Bolshesoldatsky, Glushkovsky, Korenevsky, Lgovsky, Rylsky, Sudzhinsky, and Khomutovsky municipal districts, as well as the city of Lgov.
The restrictions follow an April request by the Moscow Oblast Ministry of Energy, which asked federal authorities to act. The ministry said cryptocurrency mining in the Moscow region was consuming around 1 gigawatt of electricity. Moscow Oblast Energy Minister Sergei Voropanov said mining has no positive effect on the economy.
Mining has been banned across several Russian regions since January 1, 2025, including Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, and southern Irkutsk Oblast. Russia’s government previously imposed a full mining ban across 31 municipalities in the Trans-Baikal Territory and Buryatia.
