The Russian Defence Ministry announced on September 4 that air defence systems shot down 6,093 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the past week.
Military officials reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched several thousand unmanned aerial vehicles towards Russian territory during the seven-day period. In addition to the aircraft-type drones, Russian defence units intercepted 19 shells fired from American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems and eight Flamingo missiles.
The Defence Ministry did not provide further operational details regarding specific targets, interception locations, or casualties resulting from the weekly engagements.
Air defence operations and rocket systems
Fixed-wing drones are unmanned aerial vehicles designed with rigid wings similar to conventional aeroplanes, allowing them to travel longer distances than smaller multi-rotor quadcopters. The HIMARS, short for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, is a satellite-guided rocket launcher developed in the United States for the U.S. Army that fires high-precision missiles.
The weekly summary published by defence officials followed earlier statements detailing a large-scale overnight attack. Air defence systems destroyed 490 Ukrainian drones during the night leading into September 4, according to the ministry.
Overnight drone strikes across twenty regions
That overnight aerial assault targeted 20 distinct administrative regions and territories across the country. Interceptions were recorded over the regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow, Orenburg, Orel, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Smolensk, Tula, Vladimir, Volgograd, and Voronezh.
Air defence forces also engaged aerial targets over Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Bashkiria, and the Crimean peninsula.
The regions affected by the overnight barrage cover thousands of square kilometres across the Russian Federation. Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk share direct land borders with Ukraine, whereas regions including Vladimir, Tula, and Moscow surround the nation's capital. Bashkiria is situated further east near the Ural Mountains, and Krasnodar Krai and Crimea sit along the Black Sea coast.
