Russian Armed Forces launched a massive air strike against energy infrastructure and port facilities in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on the evening of August 31.
At least 20 explosions were reported across the city during the attack, leaving several districts without electrical power and causing damage to local port facilities.
Military correspondents from the Operation Z Telegram channel stated that bombs fell in rapid succession alongside continuous attacks by Geran drones and Banderol missiles. The Informer Telegram channel reported that Russian forces also deployed high-explosive aviation bombs equipped with universal planning and correction modules, alongside Kh-31P anti-radar missiles.
Odesa is a major Ukrainian port on the Black Sea and a key hub for maritime trade. Damage to its power grid and port installations threatens both local infrastructure and shipping operations in southern Ukraine.
Disruption to Black Sea ports
The attack follows reports by British newspaper The Telegraph that Russia's new Banderol missiles have effectively blocked commercial shipping in the Ukrainian ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk. Serial production of the missile began in late July, transforming the Black Sea coastline into a high-risk zone.
According to the publication, the fast-moving Banderol missile carries a 114-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead. The newspaper reported that three such missiles can destroy a commercial cargo vessel within minutes, leading to an almost complete halt in merchant shipping at both ports.
Chornomorsk is situated a short distance south of Odesa and functions as one of Ukraine's primary cargo gateways on the Black Sea.
Strikes across Ukrainian regions
The bombardment of Odesa took place amid widespread Russian strikes across multiple Ukrainian regions during the night leading into Monday. In the Kyiv region, an air strike triggered a large fire, with local residents reporting a column of heavy black smoke and bright flames visible in the sky.
Strikes were also recorded in the Volyn, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, while air raid alerts in Kyiv remained active almost continuously. Russian forces also targeted military logistics infrastructure, hitting a Ukrainian armed forces warehouse complex in Pohreby, near the capital.
Russian military operations continue to target Ukrainian logistics networks and military facilities across the Kyiv region and other parts of the country.
