Russian forces struck the office of Kyivstar's engineering team in Kyiv on Friday, September 11, damaging the building, the mobile operator said.
Kyivstar told LIGA.net that the office had been damaged in what it called an enemy attack, but said that, most importantly, none of its employees had been hurt. The company said it was now working to assess the damage and eliminate the consequences of the strike.
Zelensky Confirms Kyivstar Was Hit
President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed the attack on Kyivstar's building. Writing on Telegram, he said Russian forces had spent the day deliberately targeting fuel stations across Kyiv.
Zelensky said two people had been killed in Kyiv that day as a direct result of the strikes on the fuel stations, and he offered his condolences to their families and loved ones. A further nine people were injured, he said, including a rescue worker who was wounded when a repeat strike hit the same location. Zelensky said the Kyivstar building had also been hit in the same wave of attacks.
Zelensky has served as Ukraine's president since 2019 and has led the country's wartime government since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Who Is Kyivstar?
Kyivstar is one of Ukraine's largest mobile network operators and has run a network in the country since 1997, making it one of Ukraine's longest-established telecoms firms. It is part of VEON, a Netherlands-headquartered telecommunications group listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange that also has operations in several other countries.
Kyiv is Ukraine's capital and its largest city, and serves as the country's political and economic centre.
The company has been targeted before. In December 2023, Kyivstar was hit by a major cyberattack that Ukrainian officials linked to Russia, which knocked out mobile and internet services for millions of subscribers for several days.
Recent Power and Network Problems
Kyivstar has also faced disruption from Russian strikes on the wider power grid. On November 20, 2025, severe electricity outages across the parts of Ukraine not under occupation left 30% of Kyivstar's network without power.
At the end of 2025, Kyivstar bought a solar power station capable of covering 4% of its annual electricity consumption.
The attack on the engineering office came days after Kyivstar announced a milestone in its network upgrades. On September 7, 2026, the company said it had become the first telecom operator in Ukraine to complete the mass phase-out of 3G technology in all regions of the country.
