Swedish defense company Saab has unveiled a prototype of its new Nimbrix anti-aircraft missile designed to counter mass drone attacks at the DALO Industry Days 2026 exhibition in Denmark. Ukrainian defense publication Oboronka reported the debut of the specialized surface-to-air interceptor system.
Saab is prioritizing low unit production costs for the missile to enable military forces to cost-effectively engage large numbers of incoming unmanned aerial vehicles. The Nimbrix interceptor is engineered to target NATO Class 1 and Class 2 drones, covering unmanned aircraft weighing up to 600 kilograms.
Once launched, the Nimbrix missile locks onto its target autonomously using an integrated infrared homing seeker head. Infrared seekers track heat signatures emitted by targets, allowing for fire-and-forget capability. The prototype system currently fires from a ground-based tripod launcher fitted with four missiles. Saab plans to expand future versions to launch from multi-cell containers holding between nine and 12 munitions.
Missile range and development timeline
The prototype missile has an initial engagement range of 2.5 kilometers. Developers at Saab plan to double that effective strike distance to 5 kilometers as the weapon system undergoes further engineering.
The Nimbrix system has not yet been tested in combat conditions. Saab intends to begin commercial sales of the air defense system in 2027, with full serial production scheduled to commence in 2028.
While initial testing utilizes stationary ground platforms, Saab plans to adapt the Nimbrix system for installation on mobile military vehicles and naval vessels. Headquartered in Sweden, Saab manufactures military hardware including Gripen fighter aircraft, radar systems, and anti-armor weaponry for global armed forces.
Danish defense technology initiatives
The unveiling comes alongside other military technology developments taking place in Denmark. Ukrainian defense manufacturer Fire Point recently disclosed the construction costs for its new facility in Denmark, where a joint Ukrainian and Danish drone production venture is set to begin operations.
The annual exhibition in Denmark was hosted by the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation. Under NATO standardization agreements, Class 1 unmanned aerial vehicles include small tactical drones under 150 kg, while Class 2 encompasses medium tactical aircraft weighing between 150 kg and 600 kg. Western defense contractors have increasingly focused on low-cost interceptors to counter cheap kamikaze drones without exhausting expensive stockpiles of conventional anti-aircraft missiles.
