Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has died at the age of 26 from suspected heatstroke after attending a team practice session in Japan.
Vunilagi, who played as a back rower for Japanese second division team Kyushu KV, died on Friday morning in a hospital in Fukuoka City after being hospitalised earlier in the week.
"After team practice on Monday, August 3, 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke," Kyushu KV said in a statement. "He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away."
The team added that players, staff, and associates were devastated by the sudden news. "Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season," the statement read. "We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family. At this time of profound grief, we respectfully ask the family be granted space and privacy."
High temperatures and league tributes
Temperatures in Fukuoka reportedly reached around 35 degrees Celsius on Monday, August 3, 2026, the day Vunilagi was hospitalised.
The back rower had only joined Kyushu KV last month, having previously played for top-flight team Tokyo Sungoliath.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Saimoni Vunirangi, a wrestler belonging to Kyushu Electric Power's Kyuden Voltex," Japan Rugby League One said in a statement. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and all those involved."
