San Antonio schools in Texas will start the 2026-2027 school year with stricter federal food program rules that alter free meal access for families. A large number of students could lose automatic access to free breakfasts and lunches under the updated regulations.
The new rules do not mean all students in San Antonio will lose free meals. According to N+ Univision, parents will now need to submit an application for their children to receive the benefit at affected schools.
Previously, the federal Community Eligibility Provision provided free breakfasts and lunches without demanding income verification from individual families. The program required only that a specific percentage of students received benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Recent adjustments to federal and state requirements made enrollment rules more complex for local families. Consequently, fewer students enrolled in the Community Eligibility Provision at certain campuses, making it harder for those schools to offer free food.
North East Independent School District Impact
The North East Independent School District has felt the impact of the regulatory shift. At least 30 schools in the district no longer qualify for Community Eligibility Provision coverage, although some of its schools will continue providing free meals.
Parents in San Antonio must verify their school's status on the district website before the 2026-2027 school year begins. If a school lacks Community Eligibility Provision coverage, parents must submit an application to determine if their child qualifies for free or reduced-price meals.
Districts Maintaining Free Meals
Several other local school systems confirmed that all their campuses will stay enrolled in the Community Eligibility Provision for the upcoming school year. San Antonio Independent School District, North Side Independent School District, Southwest Independent School District, Edgewood Independent School District, and South Side Independent School District confirmed their participation.
All students attending schools within those participating districts will continue to receive free breakfasts and lunches throughout the 2026-2027 term.
