Growing numbers of men in the UK are turning to scalp micropigmentation, a procedure that tattoos thousands of tiny pigment dots across the scalp to create the illusion of a closely shaved, fuller head of hair, as an alternative to medication or transplant surgery.
The treatment typically takes around nine hours across three sessions and costs about £2,000. UK clinics report surging demand, and before-and-after videos have attracted millions of views on social media.
Emma Furlong, a hair loss specialist at The Aderans London Hair Clinic, said she has seen a dramatic rise in the number of patients asking about the procedure. She said it was previously used mainly within the hair transplant industry to conceal scars or boost the appearance of transplants that fell short of expectations, but has since become a standalone hair loss solution in its own right.
Furlong said part of the treatment’s appeal lies in the subtle transformation it delivers. She said patients who have been bald for some time are less likely to attract attention than if they suddenly appeared with a full head of hair, and that some are now choosing the procedure over a transplant entirely.
Who it suits
About 6.5 million men in the UK experience some form of hair loss. Male pattern baldness, which is genetic, is the most common cause. Others develop alopecia areata, a condition in which the immune system attacks scalp tissue, causing hair to fall out in patches. Stress is also a recognised trigger.
Existing options include drugs such as finasteride and minoxidil, which can slow or reverse hair loss, and surgical transplants, which involve removing hair follicles from one part of the scalp and grafting them elsewhere. Transplants typically cost around £5,000, are not always successful, and may be unsuitable in advanced cases of hair loss.
Scalp micropigmentation, Furlong said, is almost guaranteed to succeed. The procedure uses a specialist tattoo pen with three extra-thin fused needles. Because each area is targeted only once, it is largely painless, and patients are not given anaesthetic. Minor soreness afterwards is the most commonly reported side effect.
A full treatment requires three sessions of roughly three hours each, preceded by a preliminary appointment to test the pigment on the skin and map out the new hairline. Furlong said patients must keep the scalp dry for seven days after each session and allow two weeks for the pigment to settle. Results last around five years before a top-up is recommended, with no additional maintenance required.
One patient’s experience
Ray Hand, 55, a coach driver from Dorset, began losing his hair in his mid-30s. After seeing videos of the procedure on social media, he underwent treatment last April at The London Clinic.
Hand said he was not trying to look younger and had ruled out a transplant because he felt it would look unnatural after so many years without hair. He said colleagues at a new job could not believe the results were not real hair, even when viewing his scalp up close.
His wife was initially sceptical, he said, but came around after seeing the outcome. His daughter asked that the widow’s peak she remembered from his earlier years be restored. Hand said the procedure had given him a significant confidence boost.
