Sevastopol man arrested over 630,000 ruble war scam

Police in Sevastopol have detained a 45-year-old man accused of defrauding four military families out of about 630,000 rubles.

The suspect, a previously convicted resident from a neighboring post-Soviet country, targeted local women whose husbands were serving in Ukraine, according to law enforcement authorities.

The press service of Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs reported the detention on its official Telegram channel, stating that the suspect built trust by leveraging established personal relationships with the victims.

False connections and fraudulent vehicle scheme

Investigators said the man falsely claimed to hold extensive connections within security and law enforcement agencies. He promised to provide assistance to the soldiers and their families in exchange for monetary rewards. Police confirmed that he possessed no security contacts and spent all extorted funds on personal expenses.

In addition to promising official influence, the suspect extorted money under the pretense of purchasing building materials that were allegedly required for military operations. He also persuaded the victims to finance the purchase of a car for profitable resale, but he kept the vehicle for himself and failed to return the money.

Years of waiting and legal action

The victims waited years for the suspect to fulfill his promises before finally reporting the matter to the police. Law enforcement officials calculated the total financial damage across the scheme at approximately 630,000 rubles.

A court ordered the suspect placed under house arrest while the investigation continues. Under Russian criminal procedure law, house arrest restricts a suspect to their home and limits communications while authorities prepare formal charges for court proceedings.
