Akis Skertsos, Greece's Minister of State, said the government would proceed with the early repayment of 13 billion euros in public debt during 2026, as he listed four developments from recent days that he said were worth remembering.
Skertsos made the comments in a social media post published on the same morning that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented his own review of the government's work. Skertsos said that despite the August lull, the government had kept working and delivering projects that made everyday life a little better, freer and safer.
Early Debt Repayment
Topping the list was the plan to repay 13 billion euros of public debt ahead of schedule in 2026. Skertsos said the early repayment meant fewer debts passed on to future generations and greater fiscal freedom for the state.
Skertsos serves as Minister of State in the government led by Mitsotakis, whose New Democracy party has made debt reduction a central part of its economic policy.
New Planning Rules for Tourism and Energy
Skertsos also pointed to the entry into force of new Spatial Planning Frameworks for Tourism and for Renewable Energy Sources. He said that, together with the equivalent framework already covering industry, the new rules set out for the first time unified and clear standards on where each type of activity can be developed across the country and under what terms.
New Digital Platform for Farm Subsidies
The minister highlighted the launch of myAGRO, a new digital platform available at myagro.aade.gr, which he said is now the official point for submitting applications for 2026 agricultural subsidies.
Greece-Cyprus Power Link
The fourth item concerned the electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus. Skertsos said an agreement had been reached for the French investment group Meridiam, which he described as a leading firm, to become the majority shareholder in the company behind the Great Sea Interconnector. He added that another French company, Nexans, would carry out the construction and laying of the cable.
The Great Sea Interconnector is the planned subsea electricity cable meant to link the power grids of Greece and Cyprus, a project regarded as strategically important for reducing Cyprus's energy isolation.
Mitsotakis's Review of the Government's Work
Skertsos's post was tied to a review of the government's record delivered by Mitsotakis the same day. In related remarks, the prime minister said his government would not load economic burdens onto future generations, previewed further interventions to be announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair, and said that dialogue with Turkey did not amount to a retreat on Greek positions.
