SpaceX Raptor 4 engine targets 300 tons of sea level thrust

SpaceX aims to deliver 300 tons of sea level thrust with its new Raptor 4 engine while keeping its mass comparable to Raptor 3, Elon Musk has announced.

SpaceX Raptor 4 engine targets 300 tons of sea level thrust

SpaceX is targeting 300 tons of sea level thrust for its Raptor 4 rocket engine without increasing its mass, company founder Elon Musk has said.

In a post published on October 26, Musk said the next generation engine is projected to match the weight of the existing Raptor 3. The approach will allow the private aerospace company to increase the power of its propulsion system without adding significant bulk.

Musk explained in the same online discussion that Raptor 3 currently delivers about 230 tons of thrust reliably. Achieving the 300 ton target at a comparable mass would represent a performance improvement of roughly 30 percent, which is intended to boost the capability of the Starship rocket system.

Starship propulsion development

The Raptor is a full flow staged combustion cycle rocket engine developed and manufactured by SpaceX. Unlike traditional rocket engines that burn kerosene or liquid hydrogen, Raptor burns liquid methane and liquid oxygen, a propellant choice selected because methane burns cleanly and could potentially be produced on Mars using local resources.

SpaceX uses the engines across both stages of Starship, the tallest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built. The Super Heavy booster stage uses 33 Raptor engines to lift the rocket off the pad, while the upper stage Starship spacecraft carries six engines, including three configured for atmospheric flight and three vacuum optimized variants with larger nozzles.

Starbase testing operations

Preparations are continuing at the Starbase launch facility in Texas for the next Starship test flight, as SpaceX works to refine the giant vehicle through iterative testing.

Starbase, located at Boca Chica on the Gulf Coast near Brownsville, Texas, serves as the dedicated production, development, and launch site for Starship. SpaceX is developing the fully reusable rocket system to deploy large commercial satellites, support deep space exploration, and land astronauts on the lunar surface under NASA's Artemis program.
