Spotify will introduce new AI Persona labels starting in mid-September to mark profiles created using artificial intelligence rather than real human performers. The music streaming service will exclude these virtual characters from both editorial selections and algorithmic recommendations across the platform.
The company will not rely solely on voluntary statements from creators when verifying accounts. Spotify said it will actively analyze profiles using photorealistic images and fictional personalities generated by artificial intelligence. Initial checks will focus on the most popular artists on the service, and the designated label will appear on artist profiles, in search results, and inside playlists.
Verification process and badge details
Spotify emphasized that an AI Persona label does not indicate that a piece of music is entirely generated by artificial intelligence. The label serves specifically to notify users that a real human is not behind the profile. Technical information about how artificial intelligence was used during composition will continue to be accessible through separate tools on the platform.
This measure continues Spotify's ongoing policy regarding artificial intelligence content. The platform previously introduced labels for AI-generated music alongside a ban on unauthorized voice clones and deepfakes. Artists will be able to voluntarily indicate their status using Spotify for Artists starting August 11, 2026. In the future, the company will also permit users to report AI Persona profiles that lack the label.
Playlist tools and subscriber growth
Spotify also recently added an artificial intelligence assistant that builds customized playlists in response to user requests.
The company reported that its subscriber count reached 290 million in February 2026. Spotify also paid out a record $11 billion to musicians for 2025.
